Tips for Staying Safe in Extreme Heat

Posted on July 16, 2012 by Jodi Alcock

As temperatures across much of the Country head into the triple digits, it is important to stay safe.  Extreme heat can cause a wide array of health problems including heat stroke, dehydration and more.  Stay safe this summer by following a few simple tips.

  1. It is incredibly important to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, especially water.  Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, since those can make you dehydrated
  2. Stay inside in the air-conditioning, if at all possible. If you do not have AC, head to a public library, a shopping mall or a cooling station. You’ll also want to limit outdoor activities. If you do have to exercise or work outside, make sure you’re not alone should the heat start to compromise your health.  You’ll need a buddy available to call for help.
  3. People with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems also need to take special precautions.
  4. If you do not feel thirty or are not sweating, it may be too late. Nausea, stomach cramps are all late signs that you could be dehydrated – or suffering heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
  5. Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  6. Eat small meals and eat more often.
  7. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

If you follow these simple tips, you can keep yourself, your family and your pets safe and healthy all summer long.
